What Is Float Therapy And Why Are People Obsessed With It?
Float therapy has quietly become one of the most talked-about wellness practices in the world and for good reason. Thousands of people across Melbourne and beyond are discovering what athletes, meditators, and stressed-out professionals have known for decades: an hour in a float pod can do things for your body and mind that almost nothing else can.
But if you've never floated before, the concept can sound a little strange. A pod? Salt water? Complete darkness? We get it. So here's everything you need to know from the science behind how it works to exactly what to expect when you walk through our door in Yarraville.
What Is Float Therapy?
Also known as sensory deprivation, isolation therapy, or REST.
Float therapy formally called Restricted Environmental Stimulation Therapy (REST) is a practice where you lie in a specially designed float pod filled with warm, heavily salted water. The concentration of Epsom salt (magnesium sulphate) is so dense, roughly 500kg dissolved in shallow water that your body floats effortlessly on the surface without any effort at all.
The water is heated to skin temperature (around 35°C), which means after a few minutes you can barely feel where your body ends and the water begins. With the option to dim the lights and reduce sound to near silence, your brain is gently relieved of the constant stream of sensory input it normally processes and something remarkable happens.
Free from gravity, noise, light, and distraction, your nervous system finally gets to stop. Your muscles release tension they've been holding for weeks. Your mind slows down. And many people enter a state of deep rest and clarity that feels unlike anything they've experienced before.
Float therapy was developed in the 1950s by neuroscientist Dr. John C. Lilly, and has since been studied extensively for its effects on stress, pain, sleep, and mental health. Today it is used by everyone from elite athletes and Navy SEALs to therapists and everyday people looking for genuine rest.

What Is a Float Pod?
Spacious, private, and completely under your control.
A float pod is a large, enclosed capsule designed specifically to create the ideal environment for floating. Despite what some people imagine, it's not a cramped or claustrophobic space. Our pods at Tally are over 2.5 metres long and just under 2 metres wide, giving you plenty of room to stretch out and move freely.
Inside, you'll find warm, buoyant water that holds you effortlessly at the surface. The pod door is lightweight and easy to open at any point you are always in full control. Many people choose to float with the door fully open, especially in their first few sessions.
You Control the Experience
One of the most important things to understand about floating at Tally is that you are never locked in or trapped physically or in terms of your experience. Every element is adjustable:
✦ Light: Float in complete darkness for maximum sensory rest, or keep the soft interior light on whatever feels right for you.
✦ Sound: Float in silence, or choose from a selection of ambient music or guided meditation tracks through in-pod speakers.
✦ Pod lid: Close it fully for total enclosure, leave it ajar, or float with it wide open. Entirely your choice.
✦ Duration: Sessions are available in 60 or 90 minutes and choose the depth of experience that suits your schedule.
The Benefits of Float Therapy
Backed by research. Felt by almost everyone who tries it.
Float therapy produces a wide range of physical and mental benefits, many of which are supported by a growing body of scientific research. Because each person's body and nervous system is unique, the experience and outcomes vary, but there are common themes that the vast majority of our guests report.
Physical Benefits

Muscle & Joint Relief
Freedom from gravity allows muscles and connective tissue to decompress and release tension that builds up from daily life, exercise, or chronic pain.

Deeper, Better Sleep
Many guests report dramatically improved sleep quality following a float particularly those dealing with insomnia, racing thoughts, or physical discomfort at night.
Accelerated Recovery
Used by elite athletes worldwide, floating speeds up physical recovery by reducing inflammation, lactic acid buildup, and muscle fatigue after training.
Magnesium Absorption
Epsom salt is rich in magnesium sulphate. Soaking in it allows your body to absorb magnesium through the skin a mineral most of us are deficient in.

Blood Pressure & Circulation
Research suggests regular floating can support lower blood pressure and improved cardiovascular function over time.

Pain Management
Particularly beneficial for people managing fibromyalgia, chronic back pain, arthritis, and tension headaches.

What to Expect: Your First Float at Tally
We make it easy, welcoming, and completely pressure-free.
Many first-time floaters arrive with a mix of curiosity and nerves and that's completely normal. Here's exactly what happens when you visit Tally so you can arrive feeling informed and at ease.
Most people feel deeply calm, loose, and clear-headed after floating. Some feel the effects for days. A small number feel a little disoriented or emotional this is completely normal and usually a sign that your body needed the release.

✦ Before Your Session: Avoid shaving or waxing on the day of your float, as salt water can sting on fresh skin. If you wear contact lenses, bring a case. You don't need to bring anything else. We provide towels, earplugs, shampoo, conditioner, and body wash.
✦ After Your Float: Shower again to rinse the salt from your skin and hair, then join us in our private relaxation lounge for complimentary tea and a light snack. This wind-down time is part of the experience, don't rush it.
✦ In the Pod: Lie back, let the salt water do its thing, and float. There's no technique to learn and nothing to get right. Many people spend the first 10–15 minutes settling in, and the deeper relaxation sets in naturally from there.
✦ Arrival: Arrive 5–10 minutes early, especially for your first visit. Our friendly team will welcome you, walk you through everything, and answer any questions before you head to your private suite.
✦ Pre-Float Shower: You'll shower before entering the pod. This is standard practice to keep the water clean and help your body begin to relax before your session starts.
Common Questions About Floating

Mental & Emotional Benefits

Stress & Anxiety Reduction
Floating triggers a measurable drop in cortisol (the stress hormone) and activates the parasympathetic nervous system, your body's natural rest-and-digest mode.

Mental Clarity & Focus
Removing all external stimulation allows the brain to consolidate information, gain perspective, and return to work with sharper focus and renewed creativity.

Reduced Overthinking
The sensory-quiet environment interrupts habitual mental loops and anxious thought patterns, offering genuine mental stillness that's hard to find elsewhere.

Deepened Meditation
Even people who struggle to meditate find floating makes it effortless; the environment naturally supports a meditative state without any technique or practice.
There's Only One Way to Really Understand It.
