If you've been wondering what floatation therapy is like, what it costs and whether it's worth it, this guide covers all three. It's from the team at Tally Floathouse, a studio offering float therapy in Yarraville and infrared sauna at 6/157 Hyde Street, in Melbourne's inner west.

What is float therapy?

Float therapy is also called floatation therapy, float tank therapy or sensory deprivation therapy. You lie back in a pod of warm water that's heavily loaded with Epsom salt, so you float without any effort. There's nothing to learn and nothing to do.

At Tally Floathouse, every float happens in your own private suite. Here's what that includes:

  • A large float tank pod with more than 500kg of Epsom salt in the water

  • Water kept at around 34.5°C, close to skin temperature

  • Light and sound you can turn down to almost nothing

  • A pod lid that's never locked, so you can open it whenever you like

  • Tea and a light snack in the relaxation lounge afterwards

We never double book pods, so your float is always private. If you'd like the full background, see our guide to what floating is.

Why people float: the benefits guests look for

Many guests describe their first float as the most deeply relaxed they've ever felt. People usually book for a few reasons:

Floating isn't a medical treatment, and the research on it is still fairly small and early, so we don't promise specific results. If you're managing a health condition, chat with your doctor first.

Which option is the best value?

  • Trying it for the first time: Book a 60 minute float. It's what we recommend for a first visit, and on a Monday it's $65.

  • Floating once or twice a month: A 5 pack works out at $58 a float, and you can share it with a friend. A member pays $55 a float plus $12 a month, which only gets down to $58 a float if you float four times a month.

  • Floating often, or you like the longer sessions and combos: Membership starts to pay off. Members pay $70 for a 90 minute float instead of $99, and $65 for the 30 minute sauna and 60 minute float combo instead of $99.

You'll find every price, including sauna packs and gift cards, on our pricing page.

What to expect at your first float

Here's how a first float usually goes. For a longer walkthrough, read our first float session guide.

  • Before you arrive. Skip caffeine for a few hours, eat a light meal about an hour before, and avoid shaving or waxing on the same day, because the salt can sting. Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early.

  • Getting set up. We'll show you around. Then you shower and step into your private suite.

  • The float. Lie back and let the water hold you. Many people notice their mind is busy at first, then it slows down. You choose the light and sound, and you can float with the lid open, partly open or closed.

  • Afterwards. Freshen up, then relax in the lounge with a tea and a light snack. Allow about 15 minutes.

Worried about feeling closed in? Our pods are large, the lid is never locked, and swimwear is fine if you'd rather not float without clothes.

Is float therapy right for you?

Floating is generally suitable for healthy adults. Please talk to us before you book if you have epilepsy, open wounds or a skin condition, and don't float after alcohol or drugs. If you're pregnant, read our guide to float therapy during pregnancy first.

Not sure whether to choose a float or a sauna? Our guide to float therapy vs infrared sauna can help you decide, or try a float and sauna combo.

Frequently asked questions

How much does float therapy cost in Yarraville?

At Tally Floathouse, a 60 minute float is $75 and a 90 minute float is $99. On Mondays, a 60 minute float is $65. A 3 pack is $190 and a 5 pack is $290.

How long is a float session?

Sessions are 60 or 90 minutes. We recommend 60 minutes for your first float. Allow 10 to 15 minutes before your session and about 15 minutes afterwards.

Is float therapy worth it?

That depends on what you're after. If you want an hour that's quiet, screen free and unhurried, it's worth trying once. A 60 minute float on a Monday is $65, which is the lowest-cost way to find out.

What do you wear in a float tank?

You can float without clothes or wear swimwear. It's your choice.

Can you fall asleep in a float tank?

Some guests do drift off, and that's okay.

How often should I float?

There's no single right answer. Some guests come once a month, others every week or two. How often suits you depends on your goals, your schedule and your budget, and our packs and membership are set up for regular visits.

Will I feel claustrophobic in the pod?

The pods are large, the lid is never locked, and you can float with it partly or fully open. You also choose how much light and sound you want.

Can I do a float and an infrared sauna together?

Yes. Our combos start at $89. We recommend the sauna first, then the float. Your booked time is for the float, so arrive 40 minutes early for your sauna.
