If you're thinking about trying an infrared sauna in Melbourne's west, you probably want three things: what it is, what it costs and what the first visit is like. This guide covers all three. It comes from the team at Tally Floathouse, 6/157 Hyde Street, Yarraville, where you can book our infrared sauna in Yarraville online any day of the week.
What is an infrared sauna?
A traditional sauna heats the air around you, usually to well over 80°C. An infrared sauna uses infrared light to warm your body directly, so the room itself stays cooler. Ours runs at around 45 to 60°C and uses a full-spectrum system with far, mid and near infrared wavelengths.
In plain terms, it feels warm and comfortable rather than stifling. Many guests find that makes it easier to settle in and stay for the whole session.
What people use it for
Infrared sauna isn't a medical treatment, and research on it is still limited, so we don't promise specific results. Here's what our guests tell us they come for:
Quiet time to unwind after a busy week
Warmth for tight muscles after training or long hours at a desk (see our guide to infrared sauna for muscle recovery)
A relaxing thing to do with a partner or friend, since the sauna fits up to three guests
Heat before a float, to ease into the stillness of the pod

Which option suits you?
Trying it once or twice: Book a single 45 minute session for $45. It's what we suggest for a first visit.
Going with a friend: Book on a Tuesday. Two guests pay $67.50 in total, which is $33.75 each.
Coming regularly, or sharing with others: A pack works well because you can bring a different person each time. A 5 pack is $36 a visit.
Going weekly or more, just for you: Membership is worth a look. At four 45 minute visits a month you'd pay $132 including the fee, which is $33 a visit. Even one 45 minute visit a month comes to $42, against $45 for a single session. If you prefer the 90 minute session, members pay $45 instead of $70.
Want to add a float?
Our sauna and float combos start at $89 for the 60 minute express version and $99 for 30 minutes of sauna plus a 60 minute float. The couples version is $160 for two. We suggest the sauna first, then the float. Your booked time is for the float, so arrive 40 minutes early. Our guide to combining float and sauna explains why. A 20 minute compression boot session in the lounge is a $15 add-on.
What to expect at your first session
Before you come. Drink water through the day and skip a heavy meal beforehand. Wear
something light you don't mind sweating in, such as swimwear or activewear.
In the sauna. It feels warm but comfortable. Many guests start sweating within the first 10 to 15 minutes. You can sit quietly, close your eyes or chat if you're with someone.
Afterwards. Have a shower, then take your time with a herbal tea in the lounge rather than rushing off.
The sauna fits up to three guests and can be shared. If someone else books the same session, we always contact you first, and we'll do our best to find another time if you'd rather have it to yourself.

Who should check with a doctor first?
Infrared sauna is considered safe for most healthy adults. Please check with your GP before booking if you have a heart or cardiovascular condition, take medication that affects how your body handles heat, or have any other medical concern. We recommend avoiding the infrared sauna during pregnancy.
